African Sisters Education Collaborative
Description
The African Sisters Education Collaborative (ASEC) was founded as a result of the growing solidarity among women religious in Africa and in the United States that sparked a commitment to work together to support the women religious in Africa. ASEC’s mission is embedded in transforming lives through education. The purpose of ASEC is to empower women religious in Africa who in turn provide education, improve healthcare and access to clean water, undertake works of justice, human rights and other social issues, while they serve the most vulnerable and the people living in the margins within their societies. ASEC’s outreach extends to 10 African Countries namely; Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Uganda, Kenya, South Sudan, Ghana, Nigeria, Cameroon and Lesotho, where ASEC serves. Majority of the sisters in Africa serve in places or ministries where need is greatest and most of the time in most challenging situations but majority lack the skills and credentials needed for effective service delivery. ASEC empowers these women religious through educational programs that provide the Sister in Africa with opportunities for professional training and education within their countries that they so dedicatedly serve. The challenges of COVID-19 that have affected the world globally has also unleashed the vulnerabilities in our societies especially the poor living in the margins. As COVID-19 cases continues to increase in Africa and governments continue to mitigate the spread of the virus with restrictions, so many households continue to pushed into poverty, hunger, healthcare, and lack most basic needs including water. In many rural areas of Africa, majority of the people rely on the services provided by sisters through their ministries. The need to empower sisters especially in healthcare and social services has become a great necessity among the sisters in countries where ASEC serves. ASEC programs are effective pathways to that empower sisters in Africa in the ministries and services they offer in their societies.
